                                  The Unsaid

Of 1963, I remember

The nexus

little, but the

locked words: infidels

woman locked in

but for this, but for

         ice

secrecy

a sideshow trick

that betrayal

The thick maillot she wore

webbed, broad

her lips, faintly blue

sticky

beneath the red lipstick

an unknown

—purple then,

that you cannot

unquiet

or will not

exhume: the sign

enter without

my parents’ marriage fracturing
